Sarah: I’m not being dramatic when I say I went from being on the verge of quitting to having a complete tans experience and then I went on to successfully breastfeed for 2 years.  The help of a lactation consultant  was absolutely the key to my success.

Her Story.

Her Background –

Mom of 2 boys and as we are recording this interview, she is near the end of her last trimester and ready to have another baby boy. Video producer/content creator working in broadcast in the Chicago area and relocated back home to Cleveland area and now works in corporate production. Sarah is the co-founder of tit for tots, a new company which has created wonderful sticker packs for breastfeeding moms and all who support them.

Her breastfeeding history: Planning for breastfeeding the first time:

Sarah states that professionally speaking, she is typically your Type A personality. Normally she would have been reading and researching all she could about breastfeeding. However, being that she was surrounded by quite a few colleagues who were breastfeeding moms, she took a laid back attitude towards it. She intuitively felt like breastfeeding was the right thing to do, she liked the convenience of breastfeeding and just felt like she didn’t need to put much research into it. In hindsight, she feels that it could have helped to learn some information about breastfeeding as she did not anticipate how difficult it would be to get breastfeeding established.

Her early breastfeeding struggles:

Sarah has a supportive and understanding husband decision and he supported her choices. Both she and her husband were part of large families and so they just felt that they knew what parenting would be like for them. However, like most of us, the reality of newborn parenting is quite different that being an observer and not having the full responsibility.

Sarah tells us that she really needed the help of a lactation consultant. Her experiencing went from being on the verge of quitting to getting exactly the help she needed so she could continue breastfeeding for 2 years. While she did receive help in the hospital, the feeding system and care plan that she was given to help feed her baby, was just too overwhelming. Having had a cesarean section did not make things easier. Family members who were staying with her, did not have any breastfeeding experience. They could be supportive and yet, they were concerned that he was not getting enough and encouraged her to just feeding the baby.

She called all around and found a lactation consultant to come to her home. This visit turned things around for her and she removed all the other tools, that were not working for her and replaced them with a new tool. The nipple shield – which she realized very quickly that she could easily use. Sarah is grateful for the help she received from this lactation consultant. This enabled her to transition to an enjoyable breastfeeding relationship.

Sarah tells us about the need to use the nipple shield for about a month. At that point, she gradually began to wean her baby from the nipple shield. It took a little time, but well worth it because at the end, her baby did begin to bare breastfeed. We talked a bit about the pros and cons of using a nipple shield before Sarah tells us about her experience weaning her son from the nipple shield.

Sarah talks about the joy of breastfeeding her son. She shares a really cute story about how her mother-in-law introduced her to another mom, whom she quickly became good friends with. This really helped her during the early days of newborn parenting. She is also grateful for her friendship with Tessa, whom she recently has partnered with in creating tit for tots.

Her second breastfeeding experience:

She remembers looking for he nipple shield and not being able to find them. Feeling like that was something she needed to have in her bag, just in case something might not go so well in the beginning. It turns out her second baby was a whole pound heavier than the first and had no problems latching. There is a five year difference between her first and second baby as they had experienced secondary infertility.

Getting ready for her third baby and breastfeeding:

During this interview she is just a few weeks shy of 37 weeks. Until I asked Sarah about breastfeeding, she tells me that she really has not thought much about it. She is ready for anything – has not even looked for nipple shields this time. Overall she is going into it with a very positive mindset.
