Her Story.

Morgann has 2 daughters, age 3 1/2 year old and an almost 2 year old and is 14 weeks pregnant with third daughter. She is originally from the Seattle area and is gradually adjusting to life in Phoenix. She is married for 5 years this summer. After having a fun discussion about our babies names and how we chose their names, we then started talking about pregnancy ailments. Morgann has suffered with “morning sickness” with each baby and feels like it has become worse with each baby.

Both of her daughters were tongue tied and so she suffered with some early breastfeeding challenges. Morgann would love it if she could avoid that this time, however, if her baby is born with any ties, she takes comfort in the fact that she is well connected to the various resources in the Phoenix community. This time around, she will definitely be proactive and get help quickly. We talked about how helpful Morgann is with the moms that she works. In addition to her wealth of knowledge about pregnancy and birth, Morgann also brings to her clients her wealth of knowledge about the postpartum period and their breastfeeding experience.

Everly’s quick birth story and experience with postpartum anxiety

Her due date was July 30th, and just as luck would have it, Morgann had a move date that could not be changed. It was on August 1st. Well Everly was born on July 31st, as one might have guessed! The movers showed up on the morning of August 1st, almost 24 hours later. Everly was born at a local birthing center, and came home a few hours later, had a good nap and then it was on to the move.

Can you imagine having a baby and moving within 24 hours? Morgann described her experience as: the minute her daughter was born, it felt like all the wires were put in the wrong places. Her response when her kids needed something, was so out of sync with what would have been typical. Her main emotions were: anger and desperation and frustration and anxiety, rather than motherly and joyful feelings. She just did not feel like herself and said that it might almost be better if she gave up her new baby for adoption so that she could be the mother she was to her first baby.

She was afraid to say anything to someone because she feared they might call the authorities ( CPS) on her. As difficult as life was and as dark and dreary things were, she knew that she loved her children dearly. She did not feel either she or her children were in any changer. She just did not want to talk about it to family or friends because she did not want the possibility of her kids being taken away from her first and ask questions first. We spent quite a bit of time talking about the realities of postpartum depression. Morgann was very frank with us and talked about the thoughts she had about maybe even switching to formula thinking this would help her postpartum anxiety if she did not have to keep her baby close. We end today’s show with Morgann telling us how she finally was able to tell what was going on in her mind to her midwives.

Her Story Part 2.

Morgann worked out with her husband a plan for how they were going to deal with making changes.  Just being able to talk about her feelings and let him know when it was a bad day and he needs to come home from work – either on time, or a little early.  They could take a look at their budget and come up with a plan to put aside money so she could seek therapy.

Morgann said something that was quite profound.  She said that once she told her husband about how she was feeling, she now felt like she was able to “fight” this better as they were a team, vs. her being all alone it her depression.  We talked about how much more helpful her husband could be to her now that he knew what was going on.  He cannot read her mind and therefore, could not be nearly as helpful to her when he has no idea of what she was feeling.

Morgann also talked about the very hard discussion she had with her mother, who had been staying with her for quite a few weeks.  Morgann recognized that she was snappy with her mother and perhaps not the best company, but she did not share, frankly, how she felt, until shortly before her mother left to return back to her own home.

Now she has her helpers and she has others she can talk to and feel safe.  And yet, it is all still so terrifying.  largely because no one can tell a mother how long these feelings are going to last. At a certain point, Morgann decided to take prescription medication at about the 3rd month or so postpartum.  Once it kicked in and began to provide some relief, she said to herself that she wished she would have started it sooner.  She readily admits that it was not a quick fix, however, in this case, this next step was to begin counseling.  Listen to the full interview to learn more about Morgann’s road to recovery.
