Today I want to talk about the 2 of the most common mistakes parents make in the early days of breastfeeding –

Mistake # 1 – Not having a good working knowledge of how the breast makes milk and this whole thing works… meaning.. how do you build up a good supply that meets your babies needs

In order to maintain a pregnancy, your body has certain hormones working that help to keep and maintain the pregnancy. Once you give birth,  your baby is now out of the womb and the placenta is out, the body goes to work again, the hormones go through another shift. Small amounts of colostrum can be hand expressed during pregnancy, however, the volume will remain quite low.

However, once your baby is born and your breasts are stimulated, your body is ripe for now increasing the volume.  The more your breasts are stimulated, the more frequency and efficient the milk removal is, the more your supply will increase. Everything will likely be fine as long as your baby is breastfeeding well and gaining well.  However, if you have some bumps in the road, some challenges with pain with breastfeeding, milk transfer, sleepy baby, premature baby, a baby that is not breastfeeding so well, then it is likely your supply will suffer.  The milk supply is what I like to call – a baby driven milk supply – your baby, breastfeeding well, drives the supply up.  ON the other side of this is a baby that is not breastfeeding well, your supply will begin to suffer unless you understand how this whole system works and what to do when this happens.

Mistake #2 – Getting hung up on “foremilk/handmilk imbalance” or oversupply.-

There are times when moms follow advise and they keep their baby on just one breast per feeding.
This is so the baby can get all of the fattier hindmilk.  The belief is that this will help their babies gain really well.
This does not help to build a good supply and it will often mean that your baby does not get enough volume.  In the early days of breastfeeding, the goal is to provide as much stimulation as you can to help build up your breast milk supply.  Typically, if you follow your babies cues, this will be all you need to do.  Offering both sides per feeding will help to build your supply.  Only offering them one breast means less stimulation which typically will mean less milk.

When moms practice on side feeds in the beginning, instead of their babies having good weight gain, they are at risk for not gaining enough.  It is not about the fattier hindmilk, per se, it is more about getting enough volume.

In the All About breastfeeding online class –  you will learn how to avoid these 2 common mistakes along with other common mistakes.
