Emily Souder

“I think the thing about breastfeeding her is that it makes me present to the fleeting nature of this stage of parenthood even though it doesn’t feel that way at times. It makes me look at her and it makes me notice everything about her – a full sensory experience.”

Her Story.

Emily is a licensed clinical social worker, self-care & authenticity coach, writer, and Reiki Master. She offers coaching and Reiki to moms and mom entrepreneurs who are ready to put themselves first in a loving way. She has written 3 guides for self-reflection and is a panelist for MotherHustle, an online publication for mom entrepreneurs. Emily is a mama to 2 beautiful young ones, and is married to a guy who makes her laugh regularly. She is on her own journey of growth and loves helping others who want to expand!

Her Family Life:

She grew up in a small town in Maryland.  She has always lived within a 30 minute radius of her childhood home.  Her parents still live close  to her.  She has a sister who is 4 years older than her.   Her family enjoyed doing things like cooking and baking and playing together.

Her breastfeeding history:

Her mother who was born in the 1940s and she was breastfed which was not so common then. Emily was breastfed.  She thinks she was a little over a year when she self-weaned.  Her sister breastfed for much longer.

Emily viewed breastfeeding as a normal way to feed a baby, however, she did not see too many others breastfeeding  until one of her really close friends had a baby.  This same friend encouraged her to attend a breastfeeding support group after her baby was born.  She tried not to read too much when she was pregnant and a new mom.  She felt there was too much information overload and she just assumed it would “just happen.”

Her water broke at 37 weeks and she knew she was going in for a cesarean section because her son was in a frank breech position.  He was born weighing 5 lbs 12 oz.  The first latch happened shortly after he was born.  She remembers the staff not being very patient and quickly suggested that she use a nipple shield because he did not latch right away. Emily was in the hospital for 4 days and the inconsistency of the several lactation consultants did not help ease her anxiety or help her with breastfeeding.   Her OB, made her feel like she was the only one was feeling anxious after the birth and had difficulty sleeping and relaxing.  She mentioned her anxious feelings, said she needed something to take the edge off and asked for medication that was safe to take during breastfeeding.  Her lactation consultant researched the medication which deemed it safe for breastfeeding and her Dr. told her it was not.  However, after checking the information, her Dr. said that it was safe to take, however, would not prescribe it.

Emily tells us about the early days of breastfeeding.  She had so much milk and breastfeeding was quite messy.  She had some anxiety about breastfeeding in public because it was so messy. and she needed all her accessories – her pillow, the nipple shield, etc.  Emily reached a point where she wanted to wean off the nipple shield and she asked for help when her baby was a few weeks old.  She had a visit with a lactation consultant who helped her wean off the nipple shield – it was not an easy process and her baby was really angry.  Eventually, they both figured it out and before you know it, she turned around and breastfeeding was much easier.

Breastfeeding in public:

At a certain point, she decided that she was just going to breastfeed in public.  Her husband was a bit surprised when she seemingly “flashed herself” in front of their neighbor.  Breastfeeding was so easy  and she was so naturally discreet that most of her friends and family did not even know she was breastfeeding.  He breastfed until he was 23  months old and she was in her second trimester with her daughter.

Her second breastfeeding experience.

She was a VBAC – with a very fast birth and she was very alert and latched on right away. Emily went into this breastfeeding experience with no anxiety and it just seemed to flow really easily.  She even breastfed her in a side-lying position which is not something she tried with her newborn son.  Emily also had a lot of milk for her daughter and used a hand held pump to catch the milk on her other side.

Her husbands experience:

Her husband was very interested  in how all things work. He was quite amazed with the whole breastfeeding thing.  He was quite amazed seeing the milk spray into the flanges when she pumped.

What does she love the  most about breastfeeding is a toddler:

Her daughter is 22 months and still breastfeeding.   I get to still connect with her in a different way.  She enjoys the physical closeness. Emily shares with us her emotional feelings about breastfeeding her daughter as she recognizes that this  journey will be ending sometime soon.

Let’s talks snails – Whaaat?

Emily shares with us her guide – Birth story Brave.  The idea about her book sort of came to her as a “tap on the shoulder.”  I enjoyed listening to Emily share how much she enjoyed going through the guide a second time when she had her daughter.
