Dr Richard Baxter

” if they can stick their tongue out, they’re fine.  That’t not the test.  The test is elevation.  WE have lots of patients that can stick their tongue out.  Even babies that can stick their tongue out.  They will say:  oh, they’re not tongue tied .  But really the test is elevation.  How high can you lift the tongue up.  They should be able to lift up about 80% to 100%  to get it all the way to the palate.  If you can lift it just a little bit of halfway, that might be a tongue tie.  You have to have the  other functional issues as well. The problem is a  lot of people don’t know what other issues can go with tongue tie.”

His Story.

If you are like most of us who never heard about tongue ties and newborns… welcome to the club.
In fact, I never knew about how tongue tie could affect breastfeeding until I began studying to become a lactation consultant!  My guest on the show today, Dr. Richard Baxter, is a board certified pediatric dentist and guess what?  In all his years of schooling, he never heard about tongue tie babies and how it affects breastfeeding either.  So, now we all know not to feel so bad.  This just highlights one of my favorite sayings:  “we don’t know, what we don’t know.”

Turns out, Dr. Baxter and his wife found out that their 2 beautiful baby girls were born with tongue tie.  This led him on a path to learn as much as he could about how this not so uncommon medical issue can make breastfeeding very difficult.  You will really enjoy this interview as he shares with us how this affected his wife’s ability to breastfeed.    There are quite a lot of myths and tons of misinformation about tethered oral ties – TOT, a term that is frequently used to define – tongue, lip and buccal ties.  We bust some of the myths so you move forward with knowledge and accurate information.  I really enjoy how relatable Dr. Baxter is to new parents.  I particularly appreciate his ability to break down what can sometimes be confusing information, into language that we can all easily understand.   You will leave this interview understanding what the definition of ties really are and with a good understanding of when they need to be treated and who should be treating your baby who has a tie.
